Processes Surgical Pathology specimens including dissection, description and embedding for Pathologist’s
diagnosis. May be required to perform postmortem examinations and descriptions. Performs other related
duties as required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Performs gross description and complete dissection of all surgical pathology specimens and dictation of
data including large cancer cases.
2. Selects and submits tissue sections for microscopic analysis. This includes cutting bone specimen using
bone saw.
3. Prepares frozen sections for pathologist’s interpretation and assists in processing samples for ancillary
studies, e.g. culture and flow cytometry.
4. May be required to perform postmortem examinations and descriptions which include: external exams; in
situ organ inspection; evisceration; dissection and dictation or recording data such as organ weights,
presence of body fluids, etc., and gross anatomic findings.
5. Photographs surgical specimens as assigned and maintains the photography equipment in good working
order.
6. Checks and resolves inappropriate specimen submissions.
7. May be required to number surgical specimens and cassettes.
8. Ensures that the surgical cutting area is clean and in good working order
9. Maintains a sufficient inventory of all necessary supplies.
10.Follows all established organizational policies and procedure.
11.Job duties include the handling of hazardous material.
12.Accepts direction and changes in assignments willingly.
13.Completes tasks within appropriate time frame and in order of priority.
14.Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education:
An associate degree in a chemical or biological science or medical technology, obtained from an accredited
institution.
Minimum Experience/Requirements:
Basic knowledge of human anatomy, macrosurgical techniques and general laboratory skills. Understanding
of safety and infection control requirements. Demonstrated ability to obtain and prepare tissue for evaluation.
Ability to process assigned duties in an efficient and organized manner and meet the expectations of the
practice. Close attention to detail. Ability to work in a fast paced environment. Ability to identify, research
and resolve problems and discrepancies.
